Actuaries Day 2026

Actuaries Day 2026: IAI Makes Three Big Announcements in Mumbai
At the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Andheri East, Mumbai, the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) called a press conference on the occasion of Actuaries Day 2026, laying out a roadmap for the future of an entire profession.
In simple terms, actuaries are experts who assess future risks and help with financial planning from pricing insurance policies to calculating pension funds. This is exactly why their role becomes so important in fields like insurance and financial planning.

Several major announcements were made at the press conference. IAI launched its “Brand Bible,” which will now define the Institute’s identity and communication framework. Right after that, a new Job Portal was launched, aimed at connecting actuarial professionals and talent with the right employers. In addition, the official announcement of the 26th Global Conference of Actuaries (GCA) and the Actuarial Gala Function and Awards (AGFA) was also made.
Several prominent names were present at the event Dr. Debasish Prusty, Additional Secretary, DFS, Ministry of Finance, who said the government is working with IAI on amendments to the Actuary Act, 2006; Preeti Chandrashekhar, President, IAI; Asha Murali, Honorary Secretary, IAI; and Mike Lombardi, President, International Actuarial Association, who stressed that actuaries are no longer confined to insurance alone, but are increasingly making their mark in health, finance, climate risk, and public policy.
But the most interesting question was the one troubling every profession today: if AI is advancing so rapidly, what happens to actuaries?

When we asked Preeti Chandrashekhar and Asha Murali how IAI plans to support actuaries in this era of AI technology, both responses were notably positive. They said that while AI has undoubtedly come a long way, the need for actuaries will only grow in the banking sector and in decisions requiring personal, human judgement. According to them, technology isn’t coming to replace actuaries, but to make their work better and that is exactly why new jobs and opportunities are on the horizon for the profession.
Our second question was about the job portal and what opportunities it would create for freshers and students. The response here was equally enthusiastic. They said it would bring students a wealth of learning and growth opportunities, and that the job portal would directly help connect actuarial students with the right employers.
Mike Lombardi echoed a similar sentiment in his own way. He said AI has changed how organisations understand information and make decisions, and that actuaries need to be active participants in that shift, since they understand both the power of models and their limitations.
IAI also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhimtech, aimed at helping actuaries carve out a place in emerging fields like carbon markets, a sign that the profession is no longer limited to just insurance and pensions.
Ministry of Finance data underlined just how necessary this shift is. India currently has only around 100 fully qualified actuaries, while IAI’s total membership has reached 12,186 as of March 2026 its highest ever. The Institute is targeting 30,000 members by 2031.
The announcements made at Actuaries Day 2026 are being seen as more than just a one-day event; they mark a deliberate step toward strengthening the actuarial profession in India for the long haul. It will now be worth watching how these moves shape the careers of actuaries in the years ahead.
